Concept
Increasingly, electric motors are being used for main propulsion, azimuth or tunnel thrusters, and steering, as a part of IEP or DEP systems. Depending on use, thruster motors are classified in the high output, low voltage category and meet the requirements for approval by the Marine Classification Societies.
These motors need to have a high reliability level and be suitable for continuous operation, even for short-time duty types. Technical approval stages are often associated with these motors as they are of higher capacity, importance and criticality.
