Rotor NL® motors for Oil and Gas

The oil and gas industry offers the toughest challenge for electric motors. Depending on the application, the motors need to meet explosion-proof requirements and standards of which there are two distinct categories: gas and dust explosive atmospheres.
As per the latest guidelines of EU Regulations, all but Ex e (Ex eb) motors need to be of minimum IE3 efficiency class.

Atex GAS Motors

The following information is required for correct electric motor selection of ATEX gas explosion- proof electric motors:

Rotor NL® flameproof electric motors type 3RD, 4RD and 6RD adhere to the newer and stricter ATEX rules. These motors are deliverable in frame sizes IEC 71 to 355 and protection class standard IP55, with cast iron construction and a PTC temperature measurement element as standard.

Rotor is able to supply the Rotor NL® flameproof electric motors according to all kind of executions and specifications, such as Ex-de or Ex-d gas group II C temperature class T1 to T6 power 0.09 kW to 200 kW frequency 50 / 60 Hz suitable for frequency inverters pole changing motors.

Atex DUST Motors

Dust is considered a hazardous material to a motor. In an environment where airborne dust is present, you’ll need a dust ignition proof motor. Rotor dust ignition proof motors feature seals keeping dust outside the motor.

For ATEX Dust explosion-proof electric motors consider:

Rotor’s 3D range of motors can be derived from our standard range (certain modifications must be performed).
With a short lead time (Ex d), Rotor’s 2D range of motors in flameproof enclosures are also available.

Data for these electric motors is the same as the standard RN series. You can order an electric motor with contract variations, for Ex II 2D up to frame size 160, Ex II 3D up to frame size 315. Other sizes are available on request.

The ATEX 2014/35/EU directive refers to two groups: I and II and subdivides both groups into categories. These categories indicate whether a device or protection system can be deployed in a possibly explosive atmosphere with gas, mist or fumes (G) or with dust (D).

Gas and Dust category and area classification

Two groups are referred to in the ATEX 2014/35/EU directive: I and II.

Both groups are subdivided into categories. These categories indicate whether a device or protection system can be deployed in a possibly explosive atmosphere with gas, mist or fumes
(G) or with dust (D).

For all zones (gas and dust) please specify:
• Whether the motor must be frequency inverter controlled
• Whether any specific model/execution is required

The ATEX directives do not apply to:
• Sea vessels and mobile offshore installations or for the equipment intended to be installed on board sea vessels or offshore installations. These must comply with the IMO (International Maritime Organization) convention
• Modes of transport not intended for explosive atmospheres
